Hocking Hills State Park
The main attraction for most visitors to the area is Hocking Hills State Park, which offers a wonderful array of hiking trails that are free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, all year round. In winter, you’ll come across gorgeous sights like frozen waterfalls and incredible icicles as you explore this fascinating region. Since there are so many trails to choose from, it’s up to you whether you want to take a half mile hike through just one cave, or a full day’s hike where you visit several!
The most popular cave in the area is known as Old Man’s Cave, for the trapper who lived here alone with his dog in the late 1700s. This cave is located in a stunning 150-foot-deep gorge carved into the sandstone, where you can actually see different layers of the Earth on top of one another. Several waterfalls wind through this little canyon, and then of course, there’s the cave itself, beneath which the trapper is actually buried. You can choose to view this canyon from the rim above or explore the inside floor; the latter is a more popular option, so try it first thing in the morning to avoid crowds. Other nice caves to check out in the park include the large Ash Cave, the vast Whispering Cave, and the fascinating Rock House, which might just make you want to move right in!
Nearby Activities for Keeping Warm
If you’re ready to come in out of the cold, there are some great ways to stay warm in the Hocking Hills region. Hocking Hills Winery in nearby Logan is a family-owned venture offering tours and tastings and has a great laid-back vibe. Their outdoor seating area is pet-friendly, and they offer live musical entertainment on weekend evenings. With great snack platters to accompany your samples, as well as unique offerings like wine slushies, you’ll get warm in a hurry with the great vibes from this friendly family business. Try unique offerings like Holiday Cheer Egg Nog Beer and Grapes A Lot Golden Ale, a collaboration with Hocking Hill Winery. Before or after the brewery stops, why not check out some of the fascinating local antique shops? You never know what you might find, when you go exploring the past in the Logan Antique Mall! You may come up with just the perfect souvenir, or something that recalls childhood in all its glory. Just a few short miles away, you’ll also find several good spots for antiquing in Rockbridge.
